According to TIME, Instagram is the worst social media for our mental health. (Source) It is associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying, and FOMO, or the “fear of missing out.”
I think this can easily be avoided by just not following people who make you feel inadequate or unhappy. (That may not solve the FOMO, though.) Most of the accounts I follow on Instagram are cats and golden retrievers, and I’m doing great! Although I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, I do my best to make sure things like this don’t trigger it.

Instagram, like any social network, can be whatever you want it to be. It all depends on how you curate your feed. I would definitely get anxious from Instagram if all the accounts I followed were people who are more fit than me, bloggers that are better at taking pictures than me, or real life friends & acquaintances who have (seemingly!) more exciting lives than me.
I do follow some of those people, but not the ones that make me feel bad. I only follow bloggers that positively inspire me to work harder; climbers who motivate me to get off my ass and do some pull-ups so that I, too, can pull off that difficult move; photographers whose photos make me want to go outside and take some of my own; and so on.
You hold the power to make Instagram your happy place.
That was all very deep… Here are some cute & funny cats.
Parker, Lily, and Jasmine are three lovely ladies with the cutest little meows. I especially love the videos they post! #allthemeows
Teddy, Stache, Bindi, and Dexter are Oriental Shorthairs. I love their enormous ears and Teddy’s honking noise! And when they’re all snuggled up together in one place (a blanket, the pumpkin yurt, the dryer)… I just melt.
Persian half-brothers Manchego and Chipotle are two equally hideous cats, but that’s what makes them so great! I love the close-ups of their faces, they make me laugh out loud every time.
Bailey is just the sweetest old man! As his username suggests, he really is no ordinary cat. He’s extremely snuggly, especially with his three human sisters. I’m pretty sure I’ve watched the “You Are My Sunshine” video about a hundred times.
Izzy and Zoë are two black-and-white sisters from the same litter. Their big, beautiful eyes and the heart shape on Zoë’s chest make them some of the most photogenic cats I follow!
Bolt and Keel are what they call “adventure cats”: they join their human on canoeing and hiking trips, sometimes on her shoulders or all snuggled up in her backpack. Plus, they have their very own book!
This account belongs to a cat photographer who photographs her own cats Nero and Tommie, as well as the occasional neighborhood cat! I think her photography is absolutely stunning, and she has caught some really beautiful moments.
This is Sam. He has eyebrows. This makes him the best cat, period. His favorite pastimes are eating tomatoes, hiding on top of the refrigerator, and getting his human to run around the house to play with him.
Mango’s relationship with his human dad is just the sweetest thing. You will fall in love with this talkative fresh-baked cat loaf!
Loki is the most recent addition to my collection of Instagram cats. Unpopular opinion, but I think sphynx cats are adorable and hilarious. Loki in particular is a super grumpy inside-out snake (comment if you got the reference!).
That’s all I’ve got for now. If you liked this post and want more suggestions, make sure to leave a comment so I know to write another one!
